TL;DR — 90% of issues resolve in 5 minutes

The three commands that fix most digital signage problems: unplug the player for 10 seconds and replug, check the wi-fi indicator, restart the TV. That covers ~70% of tickets we see. The remaining 30% break down into brightness mismatch, multi-screen drift, audio routing and pixelation — all addressable from this guide without contacting support. If you're reading this mid-service: skip to the relevant section below and you'll be live again before the chef notices.

This guide assumes you already have a Digisini setup running (Smart TV browser, Fire Stick, Chromecast or Android TV box) and something has stopped working. Each issue is structured the same way: symptom → fast diagnosis → fix steps → escalation path. If you're brand new and just trying to get started, see the installation checklist instead.

1. Black screen / no signal

Issue #1 · Frequency: 35% of all tickets

"The TV is on but the screen is just black"

The single most common ticket. Causes (in order): the device powered down (USB power from TV cut when TV went to standby overnight), HDMI cable disconnected, the device hung after a long uptime, or the TV is on the wrong HDMI input.

Fix in 90 seconds: (1) Unplug the Fire Stick / Chromecast from power for 10 seconds, then plug it back in — it auto-launches Digisini and resumes the last playlist. (2) If still black, press the TV remote source/input button and cycle through HDMI 1, 2, 3 — sometimes the TV defaulted to the wrong one. (3) If still black, try a different HDMI port. (4) If still black, see issue #9 (overheating).

2. Content not updating

Issue #2 · Frequency: 22%

"I changed the price on my phone but the TV still shows the old one"

You edited the slide on the panel, hit save, expected the TV to update — and it still shows yesterday's version. Causes: the player lost wi-fi connection at the moment you saved (so it didn't sync), the player's content cache is overdue for a refresh, or you saved to a different playlist than the one currently scheduled.

Fix in 60 seconds: (1) On your phone admin panel, check the screen's "last sync" timestamp. If older than 60s, the screen has lost connection. (2) Verify wi-fi indicator on the TV (if visible) or on your phone in the same venue. (3) From the admin panel, hit "Force refresh" on the screen — pushes immediate sync. (4) Verify the playlist you edited is the one currently scheduled at this time-of-day (a common gotcha: editing the lunch playlist while the evening one is showing).

3. Wi-fi dropping mid-service

Issue #3 · Frequency: 18%

"The screen worked fine, then went blank during lunch service"

The wi-fi at your venue is shared between POS, kitchen tablet, customers' phones spilling onto your guest network, and the screen. At lunch peak, congestion or a router reboot kicks the player off the network. With offline-first cache, the screen should keep playing the last loop — but if it shows a connection error overlay, the cache window has been exceeded.

Fix immediately: (1) Reboot the venue router (unplug 30s, plug back). (2) Wait 60 seconds for the player to reconnect. (3) If the screen showed an "offline" overlay for >5 minutes, force-restart the device (unplug 10s). Fix long-term: move the router closer to the screen or add a mesh node; consider a dedicated 4G dongle for the screen (see rural areas guide); switch to 5GHz wi-fi if your venue still uses 2.4GHz.

4. Wrong brightness for time of day

Issue #4 · Frequency: 6%

"The screen looks washed out at noon, blinding at night"

Ambient light shifts massively across the day. A 350-nit consumer TV in a south-facing venue at 1pm loses 60-70% of effective brightness to sun glare; at 9pm under warm dim light, the same setting feels hostile. This is not a Digisini issue — it's the TV's brightness setting.

Fix in 5 minutes: (1) On the TV remote, open settings → Picture → enable Ambient Light Sensor / Auto Brightness if available. (2) If not available, set two profiles manually: Day (high brightness, cool tone) and Evening (medium-low, warm tone). (3) Schedule a daily TV restart at 5am if your TV supports it — clears cached settings and re-evaluates ambient light. Note: Chromecast and Fire Stick don't control TV brightness; that's set on the TV itself.

5. Multi-screen sync drift

Issue #5 · Frequency: 4% (chains only)

"The two screens at the entrance change at slightly different times"

Each screen runs its own playlist clock and syncs independently. Across 2-4 displays in the same room you'll typically see 0.5-2 seconds of drift per slide. For most signage use cases this is invisible. For perfect frame-by-frame sync (video wall, sports replay, choreographed campaigns) you need a dedicated wall controller — not Digisini's use case.

Fix: (1) Use longer slide durations (10-15s) so the drift is proportionally smaller. (2) Group multiple screens onto an identical playlist with start-of-minute alignment — the drift averages out within 30 seconds. (3) For genuine video-wall use cases, look at dedicated hardware like BrightSign — Digisini is built for distributed SMB screens, not synchronised walls.

6. Audio not playing

Issue #6 · Frequency: 3%

"There's no sound from the screen even though my video has audio"

Four possible causes in order: TV is muted or volume at 0; the video file has no audio track; HDMI cable too old to carry audio (rare); player audio output is set to 5.1 surround on a stereo-only TV.

Fix in 2 minutes: (1) TV remote → unmute and bump volume to 30+. (2) Open the source video file on your phone with sound — confirms the file has audio. (3) Fire Stick / Chromecast settings → Audio → set output to "Auto" or "Stereo (PCM)". (4) Replace HDMI cable if pre-2014. Note: most pub and restaurant screens are intentionally muted to avoid clashing with the venue's music system. If yours is silent by design, you can leave it.

7. Text too small to read from the queue

Issue #7 · Frequency: 5%

"Customers say they can't read the menu from the entrance"

Rule of thumb: 1pt of font size for every 1m of viewing distance. A 55" TV viewed from 5m needs text at 18pt minimum, 24pt for comfort. Most templates default to 12-14pt, designed for 2-3m viewing — fine at the counter, illegible from the queue.

Fix in 10 minutes: (1) Measure the viewing distance from where the customer reads (queue, table, bar). (2) Multiply distance in metres by 1 = minimum pt size. (3) Reduce the amount of information per slide — fewer items, larger text. (4) Increase contrast (white text on dark background is more readable from distance). See design principles for typography rules.

8. Playlist not rotating

Issue #8 · Frequency: 3%

"The screen is stuck on the same slide and won't move on"

Each slide needs an explicit duration set. Default in Digisini is 10s per slide. If you uploaded a slide and didn't set duration (or set it to 0 by accident), the player can hang on it. Less commonly: a video slide has been set to "play until end" but the video itself is corrupted and never reaches its end.

Fix in 2 minutes: (1) Open the playlist in admin panel, check each slide has a duration set (5-30s typical). (2) If one slide shows "0s" or blank, set it to 10s. (3) For video slides, verify they play correctly on your phone — corrupted videos can hang the player. (4) Force a refresh from admin panel.

9. Device overheating / freezing

Issue #9 · Frequency: 2%

"The Fire Stick is hot to touch and the screen has frozen"

Fire Sticks throttle (slow down) above 50°C and can crash above 70°C. The usual culprit is the stick mounted behind the TV in a sealed enclosure with no ventilation, especially in summer or in venues with poor air conditioning. Less common: a Chromecast or Android TV box stacked under other warm electronics.

Fix: (1) Unplug the device, let it cool for 10 minutes. (2) Mount with a 5cm gap to whatever surface it sits on — use an HDMI extender cable to get the stick out from behind a flush-mounted TV. (3) If consistently hot in summer, consider switching to an Android TV box with a metal case (better passive cooling). (4) Move the device away from kitchen heat zones.

10. Content blurry or pixelated

Issue #10 · Frequency: 2%

"My photos look great on phone but blurry on the TV"

Three causes: source image too low resolution; over-compression before upload; device can't decode the target resolution. A 1024×768 photo uploaded to a 4K 55" TV looks soft because it's stretched to 6× its native pixel density.

Fix in 5 minutes: (1) Re-export your image at 1920×1080 minimum (Full HD) for 32-55" TVs, 3840×2160 (4K) for 55"+ at close viewing distance. (2) Save JPG at quality 80-90 — beyond 90 the file size doubles for invisible gain. (3) For text-heavy slides use PNG. (4) Check your device decode capability: Chromecast Standard (not Ultra) and Fire Stick Lite cap at 1080p; uploading 4K to these auto-downsamples. Match content to device.

Resolution patterns by device

Different player devices show different patterns of issues. Use this table to anticipate what's likely to break:

DeviceMost common issueStability ratingRecommended for
Amazon Fire Stick 4KOverheat in summer if behind TV (#9)★★★★★Pubs, restaurants, most SMB use cases
Chromecast with Google TVUSB-power dropouts from TV port (#1)★★★★☆Cafés, smaller venues
Android TV box (Mi Box, etc.)Initial wi-fi setup quirks; rare crashes★★★★★24/7 venues, multi-screen sites
Smart TV native browser (Samsung Tizen)Browser memory leaks after 7-14 days uptime★★★☆☆Owners who really don't want extra hardware
Smart TV native browser (LG webOS)Auto-update overnight kills the page★★★☆☆Same, with weekly manual relaunch
Raspberry Pi 4 + browserSD card corruption after months of writes★★☆☆☆Tinkerers only, not recommended for SMBs
Pattern: Fire Stick and Android TV box are the two most reliable choices for SMB signage. If you're running a Smart TV browser without a dedicated device and have recurring tickets, switching to a £35 Fire Stick typically eliminates 60-80% of them.

5 habits that prevent 70% of tickets

From analysing 12 months of Digisini support tickets, these five preventive habits cut new tickets by ~70%:

  1. Power the player from a wall socket, not the TV USB port. TV USB ports often shut off when the TV goes to standby, which causes a cold reboot every morning and accelerates wear. Direct wall power eliminates this entirely.
  2. Use 5GHz wi-fi if your router supports it. 2.4GHz competes with microwaves, Bluetooth, kitchen equipment and dozens of customer phones. 5GHz has less range but vastly better stability in a busy venue.
  3. Restart the player every 30 days as a ritual. Pick a quiet morning (Tuesday 9am works) and power-cycle the Fire Stick. Clears memory leaks before they cause symptoms. Takes 60 seconds.
  4. Match content resolution to device. Don't upload 4K to a 1080p Fire Stick. Don't upload 1024×768 to a 4K Smart TV. Both look worse than matched resolution.
  5. Mount the player with ventilation. 5cm gap between the device and any surface. Use an HDMI extender cable to get it out from behind flush-mounted TVs.
Real outcome: a UK gastropub chain (12 locations) implemented these 5 habits as a checklist in 2024. Support tickets dropped from ~6/month to ~1.5/month across the estate, and only 1 of those required Digisini intervention — the rest were physical issues (HDMI cables, router placement) that the local manager handled.

When to escalate to support

Most issues resolve with the steps above. Escalate to Digisini support ([email protected]) when:

What to include in your ticket:

  1. Screenshot or phone photo of the screen showing the problem
  2. Device model (Fire Stick 4K, Chromecast with Google TV, specific Android TV brand)
  3. TV brand and approximate model year
  4. Approximate time the issue started (helps us check server-side logs)
  5. Steps you've already tried

Average first-response time during European working hours is under 3 hours. For paying plans we also keep a 48-hour Service Worker log per device which we can pull server-side without you doing anything.
