The street empties in ten minutes
and fills again just as fast
Through the storm season a Brisbane afternoon can go from busy to deserted and back within half an hour. It is frequent enough to plan for and short enough that most businesses just wait it out.
Two things follow, and the second is the one nobody uses:
- Anything outdoors has to be brought in. A-frames, light signage, anything on the footpath. A screen behind glass is the one piece of frontage that keeps working through it, which is a more concrete argument than any comparison of picture quality.
- The half hour afterwards is unusually good. People come back out at once, the air is cooler and nobody is in a hurry. A window that says something worth stopping for at that moment is talking to a street that has just refilled — and it costs nothing, because it is the same content already scheduled.
The heat matters as much as the rain and works the same way: the middle of the day thins out, the late afternoon and evening are when the street is busiest. A window switched off at closing misses the best stretch, and shifting the off-time by an hour or two is a setting changed once.
For anything genuinely outdoors — a covered courtyard, a semi-open frontage — the practical constraint is humidity rather than rain: the player belongs in a covered, ventilated spot behind the screen, never on the ground.
The honest summary is that none of this is about the software. It is about which piece of your frontage keeps working when the weather turns, and in this climate that is a question worth answering before choosing where things go.
In a fast-growing city
the street you opened on is not the street you will be trading in three years
New buildings, new residents, businesses opening and closing around you. It sounds like background noise and it is not: the mix of people walking past changes composition steadily, and content written for the customers of two years ago slowly stops matching the people actually outside.
What changes underneath a business without anyone announcing it:
- The age and the hours. A new apartment block brings people who leave earlier and come home later than the households that were there before.
- What is already covered. Two businesses open selling something adjacent to yours, and the thing you were known for is now one of three options on the same block.
- And the walking routes. A new entrance, a closed lot, a building site. The side of the street people use can flip permanently and nobody notices for months.
The response is not to keep rewriting: it is to re-check on a fixed schedule. Once a year, stand outside at your busiest hour and describe who is actually walking past. In a stable city that is a formality; here it regularly produces a different answer from last year, and the window should follow it.
There is one thing worth doing early rather than late, because it gets harder every year: saying plainly what you are. In a street whose identity is still forming, being the business that is unmistakably one thing is worth more than being the one with the best offer — the offer is matched in a month, the identity is not.
Compare a photo of your street from three years ago with today. Whatever changed in that picture has already changed who reads your window, and the text on it probably has not moved at all.
