For four months of the year
the pedestrians are not on the street
Calgary's skywalk network keeps downtown foot traffic indoors and above ground through the winter. A ground-floor window facing an empty sidewalk in January is not being ignored — it is not being passed.
This is the rare case where the placement question has a seasonal answer, and it changes what is worth doing:
- If your unit opens onto the walkway level, that is where the screen belongs for the winter months, regardless of where the street door is. The audience is there and it is walking slowly, indoors, with time.
- If you are street level only, winter content should stop assuming passing trade and start assuming intent: people who came deliberately, checking they are in the right place. Opening hours and clarity beat offers.
- The summer reverses it completely. Patios, festivals and a street that is busier than the walkway. Two versions with dates handle the swing without anybody remembering in April.
The other winter-specific point is one that costs money if it is missed: the entrance vestibule is the worst place for equipment. It swings between outdoor and indoor temperature all day, which fogs screens and causes the random restarts people blame on software. A screen a couple of metres inside gets the same attention and none of the moisture.
The measurement that settles the placement debate takes one lunchtime in January: count people on the sidewalk, then count them on the walkway level. Whichever number is larger is where the screen should be for the next four months.
The temperature can rise twenty degrees before lunch
and a street that was empty at nine is full at two
A warm winter wind is not a nuisance, it is a commercial event: several times a season the city goes from deep cold to shirt-sleeves in a few hours, and the whole pattern of the day inverts. Terraces fill, people walk instead of driving, and everything planned that morning is aimed at a street that no longer exists.
Three things change at once, and none of them slowly:
- People walk further. The catchment expands from «the nearest door» to «several blocks», which puts your frontage in front of strangers for the first time in weeks.
- Outdoor space becomes usable with no notice. Anything that needs setting up will be set up too late unless the decision is made the evening before.
- And it ends as fast as it started. By the next morning the street is back to normal, so anything printed for it is already waste.
The practical version is a piece of content that lives ready and unused: a «warm day» version prepared once, activated in seconds. Terrace open, longer hours, whatever the weather makes possible. It is the same logic as a storm plan, only in the pleasant direction — and it is the one kind of preparation that is impossible to improvise on the morning it is needed.
There is a matching case for the other extreme that costs nothing to prepare at the same time: the days it does not go above minus twenty. Then the useful message is the opposite — that you are open, that it is warm inside, and how far away you are from where they parked.
Write the two versions now, in January, and leave them saved: one for a sudden warm day and one for a very cold one. Both days will happen this winter, and on neither of them will there be time to write anything.
